What are the top 10 most Fuel-Efficient Cars for 2005
Posted Wednesday, January 25, 2006 5:20:59 PM by Alex Molin

Here is a list of the 10 most fuel-efficient cars currently sold in the U.S. based on the  Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) miles-per-gallon ratings for city and highway travel.

In order to arrive at a final hierarchy, we used the EPA's combined fuel economy formula: 55 percent of city mpg rating plus 45 percent of highway mpg rating.

The rating for each vehicle below is expressed in mpg as a city/highway ratio. All ratings apply to base models equipped with a manual transmission, except where indicated otherwise with an asterisk.

Also, we only allowed a given model to appear once on the list, except in the case of the Honda Civic because it's available in both gas-electric hybrid and regular gasoline versions.

Honda Insight, Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrid, Volkswagen Golf TDI, Volkswagen Jetta TDI, Volkswagen New Beetle TDI, Honda Civic HX , Toyota Echo, Toyota Corolla, Scion xA, Honda Accord Hybrid, Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Matrix,Scion xB, Dodge Neon,Toyota Celica GT

Long road ahead for Chinese cars

China's government-backed car industry has major hurdles to overcome before we find cheap Chinese cars behind New Zealand garage doors. China leapfrogged Japan to become the world's second largest car market with a 25 per cent increase in vehicle sales last year, according to the Chinese Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Nearly 80 major international car brands have production partnerships in China, and with a fierce domestic energy and determination, a new threshold of competition has been predicted. Some commentators have picked China to overtake the United States as the top car market in as little as 10 years. Chinese vehicle sales rose to 7.2 million last year, while US car and truck sales dipped slightly to 16.5 million. After a Chinese company bought the MG Rover brand, the car company's New Zealand operations manager Kerry Cheyne spent a week there visiting a new MG production site....

To preserve the past, present, and future of Indian Muslims.

New Delhi, Dec 28 (IANS) It was the synchronised explosions of seven bombs that ripped through packed commuter trains and stations in Mumbai's evening rush hour killing 187 that was the defining moment of terror in 2006, marking the deadliest attack in the country in more than a decade. The torrent of blasts in 15 minutes not only brought chaos and carnage to the railway backbone running through India's financial hub but also demonstrated how an entirely new breed of terrorists had emerged, differing in both structure and morphology from those of the past. As National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan succinctly put it, "motives and morale, men and material, scale and scope all have changed. Many more terrorist outfits today have a transnational reach". In fact, investigations bore out the charge as a common thread linked the 7/11 Mumbai attack with the terror strike in the holy city of Varanasi and the abortive attempts at the Indian Military Academy in Dehra Dun and the National Police Academy in Hyderabad....

Toyota may build India,China,US plants in 2009-WSJ

TOKYO, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp. will likely add car factories in India, China and the United States as early as in 2009, with combined annual output capacity of 450,000 units, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. The factory in India, slated to open in 2009 at the earliest, will have the capacity to produce 150,000 low-cost cars a year, the newspaper said, citing the company's internal medium-term plan. Japan's top auto maker has been working on developing a cheap, small car to sell in India and other emerging markets where most of the vehicle sales growth is expected to occur. India would be the first country to produce that car, before Toyota expands production across the globe, the paper said. Toyota declined to comment on the report. Under the internal but frequently cited "Global Master Plan", Toyota is aiming to grab a 15 percent share of the global car market by 2010, roughly equivalent to 10 million units....

Cheap labor, my armpit!

An October report by the Washington Post exposed illegal aliens sending $25 billion in cash back to Mexico annually. Another $25 billion transfers to Central and South America. An additional $16 billion U.S. dollars vanish into Asia annually. Cash remittances sent back to immigrant countries bleed the United States into serious financial consequences. We suffer a $700 billion annual trade deficit from over 3.1 million jobs off-shored and out-sourcedcompliments of your U.S. Congress with their wonderful H-1B, H-2B and L-1 visas giveaways. As to cash draining out of the United States, illegals earned that money by working under the table to cheat the IRS. Every working American citizen must pay the difference. Employers paid money out, but didnt record it, so they could hide their profits....

Chocolate, Waffles and Cross: Selling at VeloSwap and racing at home

I haven't raced in my home state of Colorado for more than a month, so it was nice to not have the weekend hassles of traffic, parking, shuttle buses, security checks, disgruntled airline employees, crappy airport food, rental cars and long drives to races. This time, it was just down the road. Unfortunately, I had some heavy - and unrelated - work to do before race day. ....

Volkswagen breaks ground on new assembly plant in Russia

MOSCOW -- Volkswagen AG broke ground on a new assembly plant south of Moscow on Saturday -- the latest investment by foreign automakers looking to tap cheap labor costs and Russians' growing demand for cars. CEO Bernd Pischetsrieder joined economics minister German Gref in laying the symbolic foundation stone for the $510 million plant in Kaluga, located about 100 miles southwest of Moscow. Volkswagen said the project should create 3,500 new Volkswagen jobs in Russia. "The automotive market in Russia is one of the worlds most interesting," Pischetsrieder said in a statement. "So far, the group brands have only been represented in Russia through sales companies. However, if we wish to enjoy sustained benefits from the growth forecast for this market, we have to produce in Russia as well." When regulators gave their approval earlier this year, the Economics Ministry said the facility would be full production in September 2008, and would initially assemble the Skoda Octavia but would eventually roll out VW's Polo, Passat and Touareg brands, which are popular in Russia....

The Ford Taurus SHO rocks, and Conan agrees
Posted Sunday, October 29, 2006 12:50:10 PM by Blog57 Team
I have an unhealthy obsession with the Ford Taurus SHO, the Super High Output version of Ford's workhorse family sedan, the last example of which was built not even two days ago after being in production for over 20 years. It's an unhealthy obsession because, quite frankly, the Taurus is not a vehicle worthy of anyone's obsession. But obsess I do, mostly over the SHO's 3.0-liter V6 developed by Yamaha, but also because the SHO was a killer car back in the day, especially the first generation. In the late 80s, the SHO could stand grille to grille with a BMW M3 for about half the price. I've been mocked plenty of times on account of my affection for the Taurus SHO, but today I learned that I'm not alone. None other than late night host Conan O'Brien considers himself a SHO lover like myself, and this YouTube clip proves it....

Why Costco is so addictive

A man who looks like Wilford Brimley moseys into the Costco warehouse store in the Seattle suburb of Issaquah, Wash., on a bright Columbus Day morning, easily blending into the throngs of shoppers picking up Cheerios, toilet paper and cashmere sweaters. But as soon as Costco CEO Jim Sinegal crosses the threshold of this vast, 150,000-square-foot theater of retail, it's abundantly clear that he's not just a spectator - he's the executive producer, director and critic. "Jim's in the building!" crackles over the walkie-talkie of warehouse manager Louie Silveira. In the apparel section, Silveira's infectious grin morphs into a look of slight panic. ....

Elks to walk for women without health insurance

"All I went for was the cheap beer." That's how Rich Fillipo got involved with the East Providence chapter of the Elks organization, but he soon realized there was much more to the Elks than just another watering hole. He has since become the head of the chapter, running an active organization since 2003. A fellow softball player had invited him to the club a few times before he joined, later becoming involved with running the bar area and soon rising to be in charge of the club. "The next thing I know, I'm in charge of the whole place," he said. Not just beer, not just men The Elks are involved with a number of projects that benefit the community, from dinners to help those in need to getting involved with the Make a Wish Foundation to help sick children (last year, the group completed a giant playground at the home of a local boy)....

A Firm's Patented Pyrolysis Converts Waste Into BioOil
Posted Monday, October 16, 2006 10:48:19 AM by Blog57 Team
People knew long ago that charcoal-burning engines could power cars and trucks. Some countries tapped biofuels during World War II to supplement stretched crude supplies. Since then, interest in biofuels has surged every time the price of crude jumps to record highs. But like solar and wind power, it has subsided when crude prices drop. But a growing number of people believe biofuels have finally arrived as an alternative energy source. Andrew Kingston is one of them. He's president and CEO of DynaMotive Energy Systems. The Vancouver, British Columbia-based startup provides technology to produce fuels from organic material. He says technology in converting organics into fuel lagged in the past, but it's now economically viable. "I don't believe that cheap oil's coming back," Kingston said....
