 Car show

The EDAG car is one of the item on this list of weird cars. This Kermit-colored roadster is considered a "study" at the moment, with an on-road prototype planned for the 2006 Geneva Show next year.

EDAG Engineering + Design AG is responsible for the sporty appearance of the car, which is actually a Smart Roadster under the surface.

The big selling point of the Show Car No. 8 is that it can be produced using existing production facilities, mainly the one in Hambach, France that will soon be idle after the Smart Roadster is discontinued

WASHINGTON (AP) - That age-old stereotype about dangerous women drivers is shattered in a big new traffic analysis: Male drivers have a 77 per cent higher risk of dying in a car accident than women, based on kilometres driven. And the author of the research says he takes it to heart when he travels - his wife takes the wheel. "I put a mitt in my mouth and ride shotgun," said David Gerard, a Carnegie Mellon University researcher who co-authored a major new U.S. road risk analysis. The study holds plenty of surprises. -The highway death rate is higher for cautious 82-year-old women than for risk-taking 16-year-old boys. -New England is the safest region for drivers - despite all those stories about crazy Boston drivers....

Police in Marshall, Texas, are looking for a man who rammed a patrol car during a chase Thursday night. Video from Officer Larry Smith's patrol car shows the fleeing motorist stop on Farm to Market Road 1793, put his car in reverse and head toward the officer's car. The officer started backing up, but the suspect slammed into the front of the patrol car. The patrol car was knocked out of commission. Police said Smith shot at the suspect but missed. The suspect sped off and eventually ditched the car and fled into woods. Officers converged on the area but could not find him. Wanted in the incident is 25-year-old Christopher Cash Clark of Marshall. Police said the chase started with a report of a suspicious person on U.S. 59 north of downtown. General Motors intends to keep investing in China's fast-growing market, and it is confident its sales are still outpacing the industry average, GM's chairman Rick Wagoner said today. "We are willing to invest ahead of demand here because we are very bullish that demand is going to keep growing here," Wagoner told reporters after taking a ceremonial spin, with Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng, in GM's hydrogen fuel cell-powered Sequel. GM's sales jumped 36.7 percent in the first three quarters of this year, helped by strong demand for newly launched models such as the Buick LaCrosse. Wagoner said GM expects its sales growth in China this year to outpace the industry average of about 20 percent. China and other overseas factories accounted for more than half of GM's total output of 9.2 million vehicles last year, Wagoner said....

Sylvester Stallone has a new ritual when he visits: He gets a car and shows off the Rocky statue outside the Art Museum to anyone he can corral. Wednesday night, he brought over Rick Sands, chief operating officer of MGM, and Philly lawyer Jimmy Binns after a hush-hush, sneak-peek screening of the studio's Rocky Balboa for Police Athletic League kids at the Ritz East in Old City. MGM and Comcast hosted the screening. Comcast has a partnership with Sony/MGM. During the statue stop, two Mexican tourists walked up, did a triple-take and asked for photos. Stallone complied. Stallone, Sands and Binns (who was instrumental in getting the statue placed nearly two months ago) walked over to the Art Museum steps, where five ROTC guys from Temple were running up, Rocky-style....

Car shows give Baptists venue to use hobby as outreach

Harold Fanning's fire-red 1970 Chevy C/10 pickup attracts attention. And he's not afraid to use that to the advantage of Kingdom work just ask him. In fact, ask a number of Alabama Baptists around the state who are plugging in to the "niche ministry" of car shows to reach out to their communities in a unique way. "People who are interested in cars are pretty much in a world all their own," said Fanning, pastor of Shoal Creek Baptist Church, Decatur, in Morgan Baptist Association. "There are hundreds of people out there interested in classic cars, especially middle-aged men. It's a fellowship thing." He believes that using a common interest or hobby is an effective form of evangelism. "Churches see how popular the hobby is and have seen an opportunity to reach people through it....

Toyota Celica owner Steve Holloway from Preston is the first winner of BP Ultimate's Love Your Car Awards. The competition was set up to celebrate the motorists who display unusual amounts of care for their vehicles. "Drivers across the UK have been telling us how they go that extra mile to show their cars affection," says BP Ultimate Market Specialist Allyson Hunter. "Everything from not allowing their own children in the car, or tucking their vehicles up at night with a teddy bear, to putting a cleaner fuel in their car or religiously washing it every day of the week. "We had some pretty amazing entries, but the affection and attention Steve shows his car day-to-day really stood out. We think we've found someone who cares as much about their car as we do about making premium fuel." Steve claims he has products for looking after his car than his wife does for her make-up....

Firefighters team shows extrication skills

From the passenger seat of the smashed-up Ford Taurus, I sat as still as possible, with a cervical collar securing my head and a medic comforting me from the rear seat. Outside the car, a team of Livonia firefighters went to work. Maybe I should have been more nervous, knowing the extrication process that was about to begin. ....

Quadriplegic shows kids how abilities can outshine a disability

SMOKETOWN, Pa. - Quadriplegic Jesse Charles never tires of the sea of small hands vying for his attention or the unscripted, unabashed questions. Can you play baseball? How about golf? What are the buttons for on your wheelchair? Does it go downhill? How fast can you go? Can you drive a car? What do you do when you get out of bed? How do you go up stairs? Is it hard to eat? Children demand full disclosure. "I'm never surprised by kids' questions," says the 43-year-old Charles, who has spoken to dozens of children's groups about his disability, and recently made his biennial visit to his alma mater, Locust Grove Mennonite School in Smoketown. "I just hope I can do justice to the questions and get across what I need to." To really get his point across, though, Charles does what any self-respecting adventurer in a motorized wheelchair would do....
