Some passengers disappointed with shoe scanners

ORLANDO, Fla. The reviews are just so-so for a shoe scanner rolled out Tuesday at Orlando International Airport in Florida. Some travelers complained they had to kick loafers or heels off anyway, even after standing in a kiosk that reads their biometric information and uses radio waves to test for explosives and metal. The company that came up with the scanning device says all shoes with metal must still be removed for additional screening because the agency has not approved the devices' ability to distinguish between safe and unsafe metals. The scanners are part of a new program that promises shorter screening lines for those who pass a federal background check and pay a 100-dollar annual fee. Copyright 2007 The Associated Press. Potential airport safety expansion awaits reviews

A group of state and federal planners are in the process of assembling options on how to create safety zones surrounding the runways at the Kodiak State Airport, causing some concern over possible habitat disturbance. A meeting is scheduled for Dec. 13, when planners from the Federal Aviation Administration, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other agencies are expected to gather at the airport to discuss the safety zones. The meeting is not open to the public. Rick Dunkelberg, contracted by the FAA to prepare an environmental impact statement, said the safety zones do not represent expansion of runways per se. Dunkelberg is the chief airport and environment planner for Barnard, Dunkelberg and Co....

His first car, in 1939, was a two-door coupe with curvy bodywork, based on a Ford Mercury chassis. He moved to BMW after World War II, with the help of car importer Max Hoffman. CHICAGO, Nov. 6 -- Experian Automotive and Cars.com today announced details of new studies that independently measured the impact of certification on vehicle sales and consumer awareness of certified programs and their features. According to the findings, Cars.com shoppers who submitted leads to dealerships on certified vehicles had a shorter time to purchase, were more likely to buy within the brand for which they sent their initial lead and were far more likely to upgrade to a new car purchase. The findings stem from an Experian Automotive analysis of 345,000 email leads sent by Cars.com shoppers between January 2005 and February 2006. Among these shoppers, 66 percent purchased a vehicle within the analysis timeframe. On average, shoppers that sent leads on certified vehicles bought a car seven days faster than non-certified lead senders....

NEW YORK (CNS) -- The following are capsule reviews of movies recently reviewed by the Office for Film & Broadcasting of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker Adequately entertaining action adventure based on the first volume of the popular children's book series by Anthony Horowitz, about a London teen (Alex Pettyfer) who, after learning that his recently deceased uncle (Ewan McGregor) was a secret agent for the British government, is recruited into the spy biz to investigate a shadowy American billionaire (Mickey Rourke) who's planning to use his high-tech "stormbreaker" computer to unleash global death. Despite a lightweight script padded with chases and explosions, director Geoffrey Sax keeps the action fast-paced and the tone amusingly campy, though some of the story elements may be a bit grim for some young viewers....

Car campers in the know get excited when the days turn crisp and cool. Suddenly state parks and National Forest camps quiet down. The crowds thin out and campsites become quiet retreats for those willing to brave the fall conditions. To make the most of the crisp autumn outings, savvy campers seek every opportunity to make their camp comfortable. The first means of accomplishing that is adding quality furniture. Crazy Creek, long a leader providing camp comfort for the backpacking crowd, offers one of the most unusual and useful chairs for car campers. The new Crazy Legs Leisure Swivel Chair incorporates a sturdy tabletop into a sturdy camp chair. The Leisure Chair boasts a strong folding aluminum frame with a heavy-duty 600-denier nylon seat and back. The chair is a comfortable seat, but by itself it's nothing unusual....

The Ford Motor Company ends production of its Taurus model on Friday. And Truett Cathy is the lucky person who will get the last car to roll off the assembly line. Cathy is the founder of Chick-fil-A and has had a longtime relationship with the Atlanta plant that produces the Taurus. He credits those workers for the success of his first restaurant. It opened in 1946 and was located across the street from the factory. A Ford spokeswoman said "lots of effort" went into making sure Cathy would have the last Taurus. But Ford will not sell the car directly to Cathy. He'll have to buy it from a dealer. ....

US reviews Baghdad strategy
Posted Friday, October 20, 2006 2:48:46 AM by Blog57 Team
THE US military has said it is reviewing strategy in Baghdad where US reinforcements have failed to halt spiralling violence, and that it is gravely concerned about mounting troop deaths. The battle for control of Baghdad, which US officials say will decide Iraq's future, and a spate of attacks across Iraq today that killed at least 38 people have piled pressure on US President George W. Bush before November mid-term elections. Mr Bush, whose Republicans are battling to retain control of the US Congress, said he saw a possible parallel in the rise in violence in Iraq and the 1968 Tet offensive that triggered a drop in support among Americans for the Vietnam war. Asked in an interview with American broadcaster ABC whether he agreed the violence in Iraq was the "jihadist equivalent of the Tet offensive", Mr Bush said: "He could be right....
