Experts: Car tech popular, but risk y

When a San Francisco start-up announced plans this week to debut a wireless service that can turn your car into a 65-mile-per-hour Wi-Fi hot spot, few seemed particularly surprised. In a plugged-in era where more drivers are punching in directions on car navigation systems, dialing friends and colleagues on cell phones and selecting MP3 tracks from an iPod on their car stereos, Internet access seems like an inevitable development. After Eddy Llaneras, a research scientist at Virginia Tech's Transportation Institute, heard about Autonet Mobile's new car Internet device, he laughed out loud. Then, he got serious. "All these products engage the brain, and people don't realize how distracting some tasks can be," he said. "The technology's outpacing our ability to handle it." Llaneras, who investigates the role of human factors in accidents, thinks that people are forgetting the inherent dangers of driving....

US car manufacturers appeal for help

TONY EASTLEY: As the US President George W. Bush leaves Washington this afternoon on his way to the APEC meeting, he's got a host of things on his mind. It's his first overseas trip since the mid-term congressional election defeat, and just hours before he left he had the chief executives of America's three biggest car manufacturers all appealing for his help. Washington Correspondent Kim Landers reports. KIM LANDERS: This is the first time the heads of Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have met President George W. Bush, and it comes just a week after the Democrats gained control of Congress. After an hour-long meeting they've emerged, with GM's Rick Wagoner calling the talks candid and productive. RICK WAGONER: Very open, back and forth....

Indonesia Oct car sales drop 40 pct, recovery in sight

JAKARTA, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Car sales in Indonesia are expected to have slumped 40 percent in October, hit by a week-long holiday, but industry experts see interest rate cuts, and cheaper car loans, stoking a recovery into next year. Annual sales are expected to fall to 330,000-350,000 units from last year's record 533,910, but analysts and manufacturers predict a rebound to 500,000 units in 2007 as the central bank moves aggressively to cut interest rates. The car industry in the world's fourth most populous nation has been struggling after the government more than doubled domestic fuel prices late last year in a bid to reduce costly energy subsidies. The move triggered high interest rates and double digit inflation, and vehicle sales slumped nearly 50 percent in January-August....

Lower auto and truck sales figures show auto manufacturers leading the coming recession

The car and truck manufacturing figures show what Chicago PMI confirmed. The recession has started and is at an early stage. The opposite direction of the stock and bond market is also an indication of the same. The truck and car sales data is significant when combined with Chicago PMI data. The manufacturing side of the economy is headed deep south with auto and real estate leading the way. The unemployment is replaced with deep underemployment. People are not paying their mortgages with their wages alone, they are borrowing to maintain status quo. That is exactly what happens in a stagflation driven underemployed economy. The auto demand will further dampen as the economy finally moves from stagflation to deflation driven recession. SMART LIVING & INVST. Peoples car program revived to boost sales
Posted Saturday, October 28, 2006 6:50:48 PM by Blog57 Team
Amid sluggish automotive sales, local auto parts and components manufacturers expect the proposed revival of the peoples car program, now called Philippine utility vehicle (PhUV) project, would be key to hitting the auto industrys 100,000 unit sales projection next year. The Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturers Association of the Phils. (MVPMAP) said the proposed PhUV will help the ailing auto industry break the 100,000 unit sales barrier next year. Industry sales from January to September 2006 hardly moved up with only 0.2 percent increase as compared to the same period last year. Total industry sales volume for the nine-month period was only 72,085 units compared to last years 71,936 units. But at a monthly average of only about 8,010 units, this may not be enough to surpass last years annual sales of 97,063 units, much less hurdle the 100,000 units target for this year, a mark that assemblers said would be an indication of continued growth....

Car makers urged to focus on hybrid development to speed up fuel cell adoption
Posted Tuesday, October 24, 2006 6:48:36 AM by Blog57 Team
Car manufacturers should focus on the development of hybrid vehicles in order to speed-up adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology by consumers, one hybrid technology developer has said. Speaking to the Chicago Tribune, Bob Stempel, chief executive of Energy Conversion Devices, said that the drive by many car makers including General Motors and Ford to produce fuel cell-powered cars would be aided by first focussing on the commercialisation of hybrid technology. "We want automakers to use hybrids as a transition to hydrogen fuel cells and to introduce hydrogen power to increase consumer awareness," he told the newspaper. "With more awareness comes more demand and with more demand, more companies will be willing to accelerate plans to add hydrogen pumps. Hydrogen stations are the key to this....

How can car manufacturers be smarter than burglars?

My brother is more of nature person than myself. He is still enjoying village life with a deep dark tan while we pale-faced people have all returned to our jobs in the city and have delved back into the hubbub of the politics of who said what, when and why. He is, of course, retired and drives around in a jalopy, claiming, "It lifts my feet off the ground doesn't it?" and refuses to replace his 15-year-old car. He came up for a day last week and I had a chance to show him my sporty new car. I asked him to get behind the wheel and try it out. When he did so and turned the ignition, the red light on the dashboard came on indicating the driver had not put on his safety belt. This warning was accompanied with a loud beep that somewhat splits one's ears, which caused alarm in my brother's eyes....
