The train, called a "rail-grinder," was carrying 11,000 gallons of diesel fuel, 6,000 gallons of hydraulic fluid and other hazardous material. | | | Car Clinic | | Posted Saturday, October 21, 2006 12:48:15 PM by Blog57 Team | | Toyota, like many manufacturers, has streamlined the maintenance requirements for its vehicles and the 30,000-mile service isn't worth anywhere near $500. Modern vehicles require far less service than in the past, but stretching the intervals as they have makes each service more important than ever. According to Toyota's helpful Web site (http://smg.toyotapartsandservice.com), all that is required for an '04 Corolla is an oil and filter change, tire rotation, air filter replacement, cabin filter replacement (if applicable), and 13 inspection items. Since it's unlikely that you tow a trailer or drive on dusty desert or dirt roads, the transmission fluid can go farther before renewal. In the past, a 30,000-mile service was a big deal for many vehicles, and a good number of shops add their own recommendations to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, hiking the cost to several hundred dollars or more.... | |

| | | Compact car makers target Indonesia | | Posted Thursday, October 19, 2006 10:49:37 AM by Blog57 Team | | Indonesian entrepreneur Hermawan Chandra mostly keeps his 12-cylinder, six-litre Daimler in his garage these days, opting instead to use fuel efficient Hondas. "I have a (Honda) Civic, Jazz and City, along with 3-series BMW, a Range Rover and a Daimler. But I drive the Civic the most. I only use the Daimler once in a while," Chandra, who lives in Jakarta, told Reuters. "It's a purely economic decision, the fuel is more efficient, and the maintenance is easy." A year after Indonesia cranked up domestic fuel prices global car makers have adapted by offering cheaper, more fuel efficient models to entice wary consumers. Toyota, Nissan and Honda, as well as Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, and even China's Chery Automobile, are rushing to tap this growing segment of the country's $US9 billion ($A12 billion) car market.... | |

| | | Exchanging gas for grease turns car green | | Posted Saturday, October 14, 2006 10:48:27 PM by Blog57 Team | | AMESBURY - The diesel Volkswagen Jetta Dan Wellehan bought this summer isn't just the Sparhawk science teacher's new ride. It's the course material for a high school class Wellington is teaching. The course? "Reinventing the Wheel." "I'm always looking for ways to help my kids understand that science isn't just something that you do under fluorescent lights in a lab with guys wearing white coats," Wellehan said. "Science is something that can be really practical." Wellehan is also a committed environmentalist, but wanted to move past the tired classroom bromides of being green and empower his students to do something concrete and significant. That's where the Volkswagen comes in. For the rest of the semester, the 10 sophomores and seniors in his class will be under the hood, transforming the new car into a vehicle that burns vegetable oil instead of petroleum.... | |
