| Tree collisions in each crash!!! | | Posted Wednesday, January 25, 2006 4:54:35 PM by Blog 57 team | Did you know that -
- About 8,000 crash deaths and more than 1 million crash injuries occur each year on urban and suburban roads?
- Three out of four crashes happen within 25 miles of home, at speeds of 45 miles per hour or less.
- About 40% of all fatal crashes occur on roads where the posted speed limit is 30 miles per hour or less.
The reason is simple – urban roads weren't built to accommodate today's heavy traffic. They evolved as traffic has increased, but often not in the best way.
In most case the solution is also simple and doesn’t have to involve major and expensive re-engineering, as many think. A lot of the accidents happen in certain places and can be foreseen. There are simple and cheap measures that can be taken to fix those specific locations.
We drivers are helpless and depended on the authorities’ priorities and budgets. Is there anything we can do to avoid crashes, death and injuries?
It seems like the only thing we can do is to try to avoid it by better understand the crashing process, becoming aware of its tragic consequences, and do our best to drive safe.
In each car crash there are actually three collisions?
- The car's collision - At 30 mph, a car hitting an object that is not moving will crease in about two feet. As the car crushes, it absorbs some of the force of the collision. In a 30 mph crash, a 15 pound child can generate an impact force greater than 300 pounds!
- The human collision - At the moment of impact, passengers in the car are still traveling at the vehicles original speed. When the car comes to a complete stop the passengers are thrown forward until they come in contact with some part of the automobile. Humans in a crash can also cause serious injuries to other humans when they collide with each other. People in the front seat of a car are often hit by rear-seat passengers as they fly forward with incredible force.
- The human body's collision - Even after the human body comes to a complete stop, its internal organs are still moving. Suddenly, these internal organs slam into other organs or the skeletal system. This "internal collision" is what often causes serious injury or death. (A brain concussion or brain damage is one example).
How can we prevent serious injuries in a crash? Our best advice is that you don't give up wearing your safety belt. Whether you are sitting in front or in the back of the car - this is a must. It's been proven to work in the crash test lab and outside on the road. Over the past decade 62,000 lives have been saved and over a million injuries prevented by seat belts. ... | |
