2006 BMW M5

We may have faked the phone number, but this exact classified did appear in a popular print periodical, and it wasn't the only one.

Another ad read: 2006 BMW M5, Loaded, October Build, Red with Tan Leather, MSRP Plus $5K.

Looks like the new 2006 M5, which is just now rolling into U.S. dealerships, is the latest markup darling of the auto market. The fourth generation of BMW's super sedan has been on sale in Europe for about a year, so America's wealthy car nuts have had to wait, and that pent-up anticipation is driving up prices. Despite the M5's $81,895 base price, which includes a steep $3,700 gas-guzzler tax, it appears that buying one for that price is impossible. At least for awhile.

Usually when this happens, we say wait, don't be a fool, save your pennies. But not this time. The 2006 M5 is so good, we say break the bank and pay whatever it takes to get one as soon as possible. Sell your kids into servitude if you have to, just get one. Trust us when we tell you, the first time you take it to redline in all seven of its forward gears you'll forget what it cost you.

Traditional BMW M side gills, unique rocker panels, satin chrome window trim, special exterior side windows, a redesigned rear bumper, four exhaust tips, and a subtle rear spoiler set the M5 apart

Brushed aluminum trim is standard, but there are two types of optional wood offered at no extra cost. (Photo courtesy of BMW North

BMW reported that sales in Asia rose 13.8 percent in 2006 to a record 126,949 vehicles. The company is now aiming to touch sales of 150,000 cars by next year. BMW sold 16,959 units of their Mini car and 142 units of the ultra-luxury Rolls-Royce Phantom in the Asian markets last year. They also sold around 3,620 units of their motorcycle products. Japan and China were two of the biggest markets in Asia. BMW is opening up a manufacturing plant in India this year and India could become one of the major Asian markets for them in the coming years. ....

2000 BMW 740i Review
Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 6:48:42 AM by Blog57 Team
When BMW took a serious run at the top end of the North American market, in the late 1980s, the model they utilized to spearhead this paradigm shift was their long-wheelbase, 12 cylinder 750iL. It received mixed reviews; the chief complaints being that it was very expensive, and really, did not display the kind of power and performance that one would expect from a $100,000-plus automobile. BMW also had a V8 powered 7-series in the form of the 740, but declined to offer it in North America until 1993. Kind of a shame, because even then, the 740 had superior performance and balance and, in my opinion, would have faired better. Anyway, almost seven years later, BMW now offers the 740 in two different versions: the 740i and a longer wheelbase iL model. Basically, what separates the two is about four thousand dollars, forty horsepower, and approximately six inches in overall length....

HEIDFELD QUESTIONS TYRE DECISION
Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 12:58:05 AM by Blog57 Team
Nick Heidfeld believes F1's decision to have only one tyre manufacturer in 2007 could have a negative impact on the sport as there'll be less overtaking. As of next season, no longer with Michelin be supplying tyres to some of the teams, having opted to leave the sport in the wake of the FIA's decision to switch to a single tyre manufacturer in 2008. And according to Heidfeld, one tyre manufacturer means less overtaking. "Overtaking always used to be difficult in Formula One," revealed Heidfeld on F1Racing.net. "I think it's going to remain difficult. "There won't be any major rule changes next year, particularly when it comes to the aerodynamics. Therefore, I don't think we are going to see any major (positive) changes." Explaining why he believes overtaking will become more difficult, the BMW driver said: "When you've got different tyres, it's more probable that the cars will take different turns at different speeds....

Spy Shots of The New BMW M3
Posted Wednesday, November 01, 2006 6:51:23 AM by Blog57 Team
BMW M3 prototypes have been spotted under test every now and then for several months, but these latest shots give the best view yet of the car with less disguise than normal. Most notable styling feature is the huge under-bumper air scoop, bringing lots of air into the oversize radiator needed for the huge 400 hp engine. The M3 also sports flared fenders and of course the quad exhaust pipes used by all M models. The powerful M-version of BMW's 3-series is scheduled for launch next year only. The 3-series M will be available initially as coupe, and later as convertible and four-door. For the first time power will come from a V8 powerplant, deriving from the M5 and M6. It is a 4,0 litre engine delivering 415 HP. Transmission is a seven-speed SMG gearbox. A traditional six speed manual transmission will be offered as an option....

Bumpy Ride: BMW X5 Switches From MacPherson to Control Arm Suspension
Posted Friday, October 27, 2006 2:49:36 PM by Blog57 Team
WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — After 45 years of quasi-religious commitment to MacPherson strut front suspension, BMW has introduced a new model using the oft-preferred unequal-length control arm design used by virtually all manufacturers for vehicles above the entry level. While the X5 is the first new BMW in almost half a century to use control arms, it won't be the last, according to Heinz Krusche, manager of chassis and suspension. "It looks like there will be some designs [using control arms] that will follow," he said. In developing the X5, "We have learned a lot, so it makes sense to use this design in other BMW vehicles as well," he stated. Bimmerphiles will recall that the company was similarly reluctant to adopt rack-and-pinion steering despite its manifold benefits in comparison to the recirculating-ball design BMW retained for years after most competitors had switched....

Honda, BMW, Toyota and Red Bull, who finished in the middle order of the Constructors' Championship for the season, give their views on Sunday's race at Interlagos...Honda:Jenson Button: I'm thrilled to end the season on the podium, especially coming through from 14th on the grid yet again and after the problem we experienced yesterday. This result came out of a genuine fight, with the car showing great competitiveness. It was one of the most enjoyable races I have experienced. It's only natural to think about where we could have finished if we had been able to start further up the grid, but we shouldn't take anything away from a great result and a very strong second half of the season. My thanks to everyone in the team, and all our partners and fans. This is a fantastic way to go into the winter when I'm sure we will all have the motivation to push harder for a much stronger 2007 season."Rubens Barrichello: It was tough for me today....

BMW: Sleek new hardtop pulls a 'coupe'
Posted Wednesday, October 18, 2006 10:48:24 AM by Blog57 Team
Is BMW's new 3 Series Coupe a coup? Sure sounds like it, if you pay attention to the buff mags. They say that this sleek new hardtop has performance so strong that it equals the legendary M3 of several years ago. Having driven one, I'd have to concur. The acceleration is stunning, hitting 60 mph in about 4.8 to 4.9 seconds, and is instantaneous and smooth, unlike anything I've seen yet on the 3 Series non-"M'' models. Of course, you have the accompanying throaty exhausts, which simply add more thrill to it all. The coupe comes in three versions for now -- a base 328i Coupe that has a 230 horsepower in-line six. If that's not enough to whet your whistle, try the new 3.0 liter 300 horsepower twin turbo in-line 6 in the 335i (19/28). That's the one I drove, and like I said, it's something else....

New BMW HP2 Megamoto
Posted Sunday, October 15, 2006 12:48:33 PM by Blog57 Team
To make even better use of the stable suspension with its great potential, the new BMW HP2 Megamoto comes with a second front brake disc ensuring stopping power and deceleration absolutely comparable to a modern road-going sports machine. Good news for the rational enthusiast is that both a tachometer and a new headlight, as well as the significantly lower seat, give the Megamoto an even higher standard of everyday riding qualities. The very looks of the new machine and the choice of the most exclusive materials again help to make the BMW HP2 Megamoto absolutely fascinating and emotional in every respect. The tank cover and headlight fairing, for example, are both made in part of carbon fiber. The double-chamber Akrapovic exhaust system gives the new Megamoto a powerful and throaty sound very appropriate for a machine of this kind....

BMW's 3 Series Shooting Brake Aims Directly At Audi
Posted Friday, October 13, 2006 10:48:36 PM by Blog57 Team
German magazine Autobild is reporting that BMW may be working on a shooting brake version of its best-selling 3-series range. They're claiming BMW will release such a model in 2008 and that it will be based on the 3-series coupe. Interestingly, their chop shows a new face for the 3-series, but we doubt the styling on the coupe will be changed after only two years. This rendering was shown on the cover of their latest issue, and we expect more details to be released soon. More photos in our auto show photo galleries... Auto Show photo galleries!!!!
